7 Signs Your Business Website Is Hurting Your Sales (2026)

Your website looks fine but the phone is not ringing. Here are seven signs the site itself is costing you sales, and how to fix them.

Published 24 July 2026

Small business owner in Trinidad reviewing a slow, outdated website on a laptop and phone

Your website looks fine. It has your logo, your services, a nice photo on the homepage. So why is the phone not ringing? Often the site itself is the leak. It loads slowly, hides the one button that matters, or never shows up when someone searches for you. None of that is obvious when you look at your own site on your own laptop, but it quietly costs you customers every week.

Here are the seven signs we see most often when a business tells us their website "just isn't doing anything." Each one has a real sales cost, and each one is fixable.

1. It takes more than three seconds to load

Speed is the first thing a visitor judges, before they read a word. According to Google, when a page's load time goes from one second to three seconds, the chance that someone leaves before it finishes jumps by about 32 percent. Stretch it to five seconds and that probability roughly doubles.

Most of your visitors are on a phone, on mobile data, sometimes with a weak signal. A heavy homepage stuffed with large images and page-builder bloat can take five or six seconds to appear on that connection. By then, half of them are gone, back to Google, clicking your competitor.

The fix: test your real load time, then cut the weight. Compress images, drop unused plugins, and use proper hosting. Our guide on how fast websites win more customers goes deeper, but the short version is that speed is a sales feature, not a technical detail.

2. It does not work properly on a phone

Open your website on your own phone right now. Do you have to pinch and zoom to read anything? Do buttons sit too close together to tap? Does a menu run off the side of the screen?

The majority of local web traffic in Trinidad and the wider Caribbean is mobile. If your site was built for a desktop and merely shrunk down, phone visitors get a frustrating experience, and frustrated visitors do not fill out forms or call. Worse, Google ranks the mobile version of your site, so a poor mobile layout can quietly drag down where you appear in search.

The fix: the site needs to be built mobile-first, not desktop-first with mobile as an afterthought. Text should be readable without zooming, buttons should be thumb-sized, and nothing should overflow the screen.

3. There is no clear next step

A visitor lands on your page. They are mildly interested. Now what? If the answer is not obvious in a couple of seconds, they do nothing, and doing nothing means you lost the sale.

Plenty of business sites describe what the company does but never tell the visitor what to do next. No obvious "Call us," no "Get a quote," no "Order on WhatsApp," or the button is buried at the bottom of a long page. Every page should have one clear action you want the visitor to take.

The fix: decide the single most valuable action per page (call, book, message, buy) and make it impossible to miss. One primary button, repeated, in your brand colour, above the fold and again at the end.

4. You cannot be found on Google

If someone searches your business name and you do not come up, or they search for your service in your town and you are nowhere, the website may as well not exist. A beautiful site that no one can find generates no sales.

This usually comes down to two things: the site was never set up to be indexed properly, and the business has no local search presence. We wrote a full breakdown in why your Trinidad business isn't showing up on Google, but the pattern is almost always the same, and almost always fixable.

The fix: make sure the site is indexed, the basics of on-page SEO are in place, and your Google Business Profile is claimed and complete. That combination is what puts you in the local results where buyers actually look.

5. It looks like it was built in 2014

Design is not just vanity. A dated, cluttered, or clearly DIY website tells a visitor something about your business before they read a single sentence. If your competitor's site looks current and yours looks like a template from a decade ago, the visitor assumes their business is more established, even if yours is better.

Trust is the currency here. People hand over money, deposits, and personal details based partly on whether a site feels legitimate. An outdated look leaks trust, and lost trust is lost revenue.

The fix: a clean, current design in your brand, with real photos, readable type, and consistent spacing. It does not need to be flashy. It needs to look like a real business that is still open.

6. It is hard to actually contact you

Count the taps it takes a visitor to reach you. If your phone number is not clickable, your WhatsApp is not linked, or your contact details are hidden three pages deep, you are adding friction at the exact moment someone is ready to buy.

Every extra step between "I want this" and "I contacted them" costs you a percentage of people who simply give up.

The fix: put a clickable phone number and a WhatsApp link in the header and footer of every page. On mobile, a tap should start the call or open the chat, no copying and pasting.

7. You have no idea what visitors are doing

If you cannot answer "how many people visited my site last month and what did they do," you are flying blind. You do not know which pages work, where people drop off, or whether your site is improving or declining. Without measurement, every fix is a guess.

The fix: install analytics so you can see traffic, top pages, and where visitors leave. Once you can see the leaks, you can plug the ones that cost you the most.

Signs, costs, and fixes at a glance

The same seven signs, with the sales cost and the fix for each:

  • Loads slower than 3 seconds: visitors leave before the page appears. Fix: compress images, cut bloat, better hosting.
  • Poor on mobile: most of your traffic gets a bad experience. Fix: rebuild mobile-first.
  • No clear next step: interested visitors do nothing. Fix: one obvious primary action per page.
  • Invisible on Google: buyers never find you. Fix: indexing, on-page SEO, and a complete Google Business Profile.
  • Dated design: trust leaks before they read a word. Fix: a clean, current design in your brand.
  • Hard to contact: ready buyers give up. Fix: clickable phone and WhatsApp on every page.
  • No analytics: you cannot fix what you cannot see. Fix: install analytics and watch the leaks.

How to know which of these apply to you

You do not have to guess. Run your site through our free Website Health Check. It looks at speed, SEO, mobile performance, security, and more, then gives you a plain-English report on what is working and what is quietly costing you customers. No account, no sales call required.

If the report shows more red than you would like, that is exactly the kind of thing we fix. See what we build, browse our work, or book a short call and we will walk through your site together and tell you honestly whether it is helping or hurting your sales.
